Year 5 and 6

Spellings

Spelling tests will take place every Monday morning. Following the test, children will be taught their new spellings for the week and will bring a copy of the spelling list home. A Look, Cover, Write, Check sheet will also be sent home each Monday to support children with practising their spellings.

The weekly spellings will be uploaded to EdShed (www.edshed.com), where children can practise their words and play games linked to the spelling list. All children have their own login details, which have been sent home. We encourage children to use EdShed several times a week for around 15 minutes to help develop their spelling knowledge and confidence.

The children will then be tested on these spellings the following Monday before their new set of spellings is introduced.

Reading

In Years 5 and 6, we encourage children to become independent readers and develop a love of books. Children will therefore be heard reading less frequently in school, but regular reading at home remains important. Where possible, please listen to your child read aloud to support their understanding and pronunciation of increasingly challenging vocabulary.

Encourage your child to read for enjoyment and allow them to choose books that interest them. Comics, magazines and illustrated books can be great choices, particularly for reluctant readers. If they are not enjoying a book, encourage them to try something different. Children can borrow books from our classroom bookshelf and school library. We will also continue to use reading journals to monitor and encourage regular reading.

Physical Education

The children will have PE on a Tuesday. Please ensure that your child comes into school on Tuesday with their PE Kit on (black shorts or track suit bottoms; red PE T-Shirt with school logo and black 1/4 zip with school logo on).

Homework

In Year 5, children will receive one piece of homework each week, while in Year 6 they will receive two: Maths and either grammar or reading. Homework will usually reinforce learning from class and, in Year 6, will also help prepare children for SATs and high school.

Homework will be set on a Friday and due the following Thursday, ready to mark together on Friday. Children will receive a paper copy to take home.

Please encourage your child to complete their homework each week. If they have any difficulties, please let us know so we can support them in school - we do not want children struggling for hours at home.

Snack

Snacks are available to purchase during morning break and children will need to bring cash if they wish to buy a snack. If your child brings a snack from home, please ensure it follows the school’s healthy snack policy. Crisps, chocolate and sweets are not permitted during break-times.

Walking Home

Walking home letters will be sent out in the first week of term, if there are any changes to this, please contact the office or come and speak to Mrs Cooper.

SATs Tests

As you are probably aware, the children will be sitting their end of primary school SATs tests in May. We will be holding an information evening on the 23rd of September at 4.30pm.

We ask that parents do not access online past papers to administer to your child at home - we will be using all of them in school to aid our own in house assessment and check for gaps in learning. If the children have already seen them, it causes us problems!
