Chester District Athletics
Lesson: Physical education
On Friday, it was the Chester District Athletics. It was the first time that we had entered this tournament and we took a large squad of boys and girls from the Juniors.
It was a huge event with over 20 schools attending and it took place at the Deeside athletics track. It meant that the children got to experience running on an athletics track in front of a large crowd for the first time.
In the morning, the Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in 3 different field events: throwing a cricket ball, javelin and long jump. In the Javelin, Polly made it to the finals, and was holding in first place for a long time. However, she was pipped with the last few throws and won bronze. In the long jump, Seb made it itno the last eight. He was in silver up until the last two jumps. Sadly, he missed out on a medal by 1cm. And in the throwing, Harley also made it into the final eight but came fourth.
In the afternoon, it was the track. In the sprint races, you had to run heats first. Polly made it into the 200m final. In the 100m, Rosie, Violet, Jermiah, Henry and Ellis all made it to the finals. The relays were very exciting to watch. 3 of our teams won their races and made it into the final.
In the 600m, Sienna ran a really good race, finishing 9th. Then, it was time for the finals!
Polly was dominant in the 200m and crossed the line first to win gold. In the 100m, Rosie, Violet, Jermiah and Henry ran so well, and just missed out on a medal. But they can be very proud of making in the top 8 in Chester and earned points for the team. Ellis was our last hope of a medal and he didn't disappoint! He crossed the line in second place to win silver.
Then, it was the realy finals! Our Year 4 girls were holding in third, but finished just outsdie the medals. Our Year 5 and 6 boys started as one of the favourites for a medal, but they suffered the agony of dropping the baton; in the heat of the race it can easily happen. Our Year 5 and 6 girls were strong medal contenders. It had 2 100m finalists and a 200m winner. However, Polly got the baton on the final leg in fifth place. She ran an incredible race and took the bronze on the line.
It was a long day, but a really enjoyable day. Hopefully, it was a memorable experience for everyone and I hope it inspired some to take up athletics in the future.
