Reception Birds Showcase

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: Caterpillars Year: 2025 - 2026

On Thursday, our Reception children invited their parents, governors and bird experts to share their incredible work this term and also for them to act as experts in their chosen field. We had experts in Robins, Woodpeckers, Barn Owls, Puffins and even Oystercatchers.

During the Spring term, the children have been focusing on birds. They had an expert bird watcher enthusiast - Mr Chapman Brown - take them on a walk of the school grounds with binoculars to identify the different birds that visit our school grounds. Then, they had experts on birds of prey come to their class to allow them see these beautiful animals close up - some were even brave enough to hold them! To help them in their own research, their Year 6 buddies paid them a visit in class to support them with the reading and recording of the information.

In class, the children have worked so hard creating beautiful art work in a range of different media of different birds. They found out about their habitats and created their own mini habitats and they also learned what they liked to eat and how they were adapted to their environments to catch their prey and create homes to live in.

Before sharing their work to the school community, the children visited Burton Mere. They confidently presented to some of the experienced bird watchers what they had learned. It is fair to say they were very impressed. And they say that every day is a learning day and during the showcase I learned a lot of new things. I never knew a puffin's beak changed colour in the winter and now I know why woodpeckers peck the trees and how they use their tail to hold on to the tree.

A huge well done to the whole Reception departmnet - it truly was a wonderful showcase.
