Tag Rugby Tournament
On Thursday, the weather was kind and the Tag Rugby tournament got to go ahead at the Heber for our Year 5 and 6 pupils.
We had a tough group with both Malpas and Tattenhall. We hit the ground running against Malpas. Mollie started proceedings, finishing a nice move to score our first try. Having impressed in the warm up match, Henry was selected to play, even though he was in Year 4, and he set up his brother - Toby - to score. And then he did it again! Harley then received the ball and raced down the left flank. He was tagged, but passed off to Henry who raced to the try line. At 4 - 0, we were comfortable, but Malpas got 1 try back. However, before the end, Polly put the icing on the cake with a solo try. A 5 - 1 win.
Next up was Tattenhall who were extremely well organised and it was a tough match. George showed his class down our left flank and he weaved through their defensive line to score. But Tattenhall immediately hit back. At 1 - 1, it was tense. We didn't need to worry for too long. Toby weaved in and out between the line to score and a second George try soon followed. A 3 - 1 win and we were in the semi-finals.
It was Tushingham in the semi-final, who beat us at the same stage last year! And it could not have been closer! Henry scored a wonderful try and with the score at 1 -1 Toby raced away and was tackled just short of the try line. He passed off to Mollie who burst through the gap to score. Jack and Ted were tested in defense with the scores level. The equalising try had a hint of a forward pass, but they didn't let their heads drop. Toby recieved the ball in our own half and sprinted clear to score another try. The last two minutes felt like 2 hours. With Tushingham looking certain to score, Toby made an incredible tackle just before the try line. The whistle went, signalling we had made the final.
Tattenhall were the opponents and we knew we had to be at our best. Eliza brought a calmness with ball in hand and marshalled our line well. With our first attack, George showed us all why he was captain as jinxed through to score. The perfect start and it calmed everyone's nerves. But George then had an issue with his belt and Oscar came on; he was probing their defenisve line time and time again. The pressure finally told and Toby passed off to Mollie who placed the ball down for a try. Tattenhall replied with a try, but now we were flying and playing at our very best. Henry scored a superb solo try and Harley then raced over the line with his first try of the day. They had got a taste for it and both Henry and Harley scored another try each. A 7 - 2 win meant we were the champions once again!
It was a proper team performance, with everyone contributing with important tackles, mazy runs and amazing trys. It was hard to single out any one person's performance, but player of the tournament goes to Henry. A late call up with a brilliant performance in the warm up match. Only in Year 4, and he was utterly fearless. He laid up several tries and got over the line himself, scoring important tries in the final! A huge well done to everyone.
