Football Super 8S
Our Year 5 and 6 football team managed to qualify for the Super 8s finals. The 8 teams invited were the best 8 teams across the Cheshire West and Chester district. Out of 35 starting teams, we had made it to the final eight.
We were in a group of 4 teams with Mill View, Overleigh and Upton Heath. We knew what needed to be done - win the group and we go to the final!
We started really well in our first game against Overleigh. Harley skipped passed two defensive tackles and smashed the ball past the keeper theough a group of players. Soon after, Jermiah drove through the midfield and swung in a shot that the keeper could only parry. Ellis was there to apply the finish. In the second half, due to the small sized pitches, Licoln was going long with his goal kicks. He capped off a fine performance when he scored straight from the kick off. A 3 - 0 was a fine start.
Our next opponents had also won their first game and Upton Heath had a strong team. We were two well matched teams. From one of our corners, we passed back to our defender who got pressed quiickly. They scored from the break away and that is how it stayed. That was until Lincoln had another goal kick. He launched it into the box, it bounced awkwardly and ended up in the goal. A 1 - 1 draw was a fair result and it would go to the last game.
Mill View were well organised and strong, but we played the better football. We passed it around and Jermiah did several runs, leaving defenders in their wake. We knew any kind of win would be enough to make the final. Any attacks by Mill View were snuffed out by Teddy and Logan. Then, we broke down the left and Ellis got his shot away. The keeper could only parry it and Harley reacted first, smashing the ball into the back of the night. A 1 -0 victory and we won the group on goal difference!
History was made as it was the first time Farndon made the Super 8s. And our task was not an easy one! It was Kesall - the national champions! The first half was fairly even between the two teams. Lincoln was only called into action once, making a good save low to his left. In the second half, Kelsall applied more pressure, leaving us with only break aways on the counter. With the scores still locked at 0 - 0, time was running out and with just seconds remaining, Kelsall got a corner. With literally the last kick of the game, they hit a low cross into the box and the ball was flicked across the line. It was a sucker punch, as we had no time to react.
A silver medal this time. And each of the players can be so proud of themselves. Runners up out of 35 schools is a wonderful achievement and they can look back on their season with pride.
