Gifted and talented days at Abbey Gate

Class: Year 5 Owls Year: 2015 - 2016

On Thursday and Friday we sent groups of Year 5 pupils to gifted and talented days for subjects such as maths, science, art and technology. On Thursday, our pupils were challenged on maths and science. In maths, they were given a range of code breaking tasks to solve a crime. They had to use all their skills in coordinates, problem solving and reasoning skills. Then they made 3D shapes with jelly babies and pasta! In science, they conducted experiments with a range of chemicals to make their very own hand warmers. It was to teach them about reactions that give an exothermic reaction. I think it is fair to say the pupils enjoyed themselves.

On Friday, it was art and technology. In the morning, the children had to design their own city and then build it! They used their saws to cut the wood to different sizes and they created different tower blocks, parks, houses and even a football stadium. In the afternoon, it was the art session. Inspired by the work of different artists, including Tim Pugh, to create colourful patterns. They used a variety of different media such as collage, sculpture and clay modelling.
