Year 6 Kestrels 2020-2021

Mrs Davies

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome Back Kestrels! I can't wait to greet you all on Wednesday as Year 6's! I'm sure you have all grown loads and will have lots to tell me :)

This term's topic is Endangered and the children will be focussing specifically on the geography of South America along with the plight its wildlife. We will also spend much of the term looking at sustainability and the role we can have in shaping the world of the future.

Spellings

New spellings will be taught on a Monday, where a 'Look, Cover, Write, Check' sheet will be given out for children to practice these new spellings at home. During the rest of the week, children will be given a variety of activities based around these spellings to help embed the new pattern or rule. Instead of a weekly spelling test, children will be assessed on the spellings they have learnt so far at the end of each half-term, with this including 3-4 words from each week. All children now have their own login details, which have been sent home, to access www.spellingframe.co.uk and should be using this website to help improve their spelling knowledge several times a week for 15 minutes.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask either Mrs Davies or Mrs Richards. We are greatly looking forward to having you all in our class and can't wait to welcome you back to school!

PE

The children will have PE on a Tuesday. Please ensure that your child comes into school on Tuesday with their PE Kit on.

SPELLINGS

Spelling Frame will be set on a Friday weekly and it is expected that the children will complete a test by the following Thursday at home to improve their knowledge of spelling rules and in readiness for SATs.

HOMEWORK

In addition to reading, spellings and time  table rockstars, children will recieve homework on the class page on a Friday to be completed for the following Friday. Please see the homework tab for further details.

PLEASE NOTE: much of the homework this year will take the form of practice papers in readiness for end of year SATS.

SATS

As you are probably aware, the children will be sitting their end of primary school SATs tests in May. We will be holding an information evening later on in the term. Watch this space for details..

We ask that parents do not access online past papers to administer to your child at home - we will be using all of them in school to aid our own in house assessment and check for gaps in learning. If the children have already seen them, it causes us problems!

In the meantime, please feel free to access the information leaflet in the 'Files to Download' section below.

We look forward to the year ahead...

HOME LEARNING

Hi Year 6

In this Summer half term, we are bringing into line the learning of the pupils - whatever bubble they may well be in. For those at home, there is of course the weekly Newsletter that can be downloaded. For our critical worker children, we are looking to bring in more formal learning across the week. This will be supported with White Rose Maths and the Oak Academy online learning for Literacy, Humanities and Science. There will of course be opportunities for Art and Craft activities, along with Physical Education sessions outside. Below is a timetable which staff will try to follow in the week with our critical worker bubbles, to support parents on those days when they are learning at home.
