Gifted and Able Science and Maths

Lesson: Maths

Class: Year 5 Owls Year: 2014 - 2015

Five of our Year 5 children had the opportunity to visit Abbey Gate College for a gifted and able science and maths day.

They had a wonderful day which started in the Chemistry lab. The children were able to use different chemicals to make various solutions. To create the necessary the reaction they had to heat the mixture with a bunsen burner; probably the favourite part of the day for all the children. They all managed to make their very own hand warmers.

In the afternoon, the children got to partake in 2 maths sessions. In the first lesson, Mrs Walker ( no relation ) taught the children how to solve a range of complex problems to crack a code and identify a thief by tabulating results. In the next session, the pupils had to make some complicated 3D shapes with spaghetti and jelly babies; a fun way to identify edges and vertices. Then, they had the chance to tabulate results and try to work out the equation;

F + V = E + 2

The children were fantasic throguhout the day and had a great time. We certainly have some talented mathematicians and scientists in Year 5. You will also be able to read about the day from the perspective of one of the children on the pupil blog.
