Football Tournament

Lesson: Physical education

Class: Year 5 and 6 Kingfishers Year: 2022 - 2023

Our Year 5 and 6 football team took part in the Broxton football tournament, playing against other local schools. We hadn't won this for 8 long years so it was time to put things right!

I think it is fair to say we started slowly, but it was to be expected as we hadn't played as a team for some time. The Shocklach keeper fumbled a shot and Finley was on hand to lob it over him for a 1 - 0 win. Our second match was against Tilston who had just earned a tough victory against a very good Malpas team. We were on top and had the chances. Ralph and Zac both fired wide and Finley struck a free kick just over. Tilston were a threat on the break, but Toby and defnesive teammates kept the shots to a minimum. It ended in a 0 - 0 draw.

So the pressure was on! Against Bickerton, it finally clicked and we began to play the football we are capable of. An early indirect free-kick allowed Finley to stroke in the first off the post. Then, Zac made one of his famous bursts through the midfield; a neat drag over to beat the defender and he struck it cleanly into the bottom corner. But the best was yet to come! Finley played an unbelievable diagonal chipped through ball to Ralph and he fired a blistering half volley into the top bins! It ended 3 - 0 and seriously helped our goal difference.

Next up, it was Tushingham. Their heads were down after a heavy defeat against Malpas. Our confidence was sky high and it's fair to say we came out of the traps hard and fast. In the first minute, Ralph pressed the back pass, blocked it, and chased after the loose ball to the confidently drive it into the bottom corner. Finley then showed off is foot work with a cheeky roll over and scored the second. The midfield began to dominate, playing inviting balls through to our front man. Ralph managed to complete his hat trick with two well taken goals where he rounded the keeper - 4 - 0 victory.

Against Malpas, we knew a draw was enough. Finley gave some steel to our defence along with Ayse whose performance for the whole tournament was faultless. Filip played up front and was so close to scoring a debut goal and Fraser had his best game and was finding space on the left and was a constant threat. We looked the more likely to score, but we ran out of time and it ended in a 0 - 0 draw.

A special mention to Harvey who played in goal and went through the entire tournament without conceding a goal. His distribution was excellent, with pin point accuracy.

We finished with 2 draws and 3 wins which was enough to win the tournament. Player of the tournament could have been anyone, but it has to go to Captain Fantastic - Finley. Some wonderul assists, scored in all 3 victories and also his defensive work was outstanding. But every one of our players can be very proud of their performance.
