Basketball at the Phoenix

Lesson: Physical Development

Class: Year 6 Kestrels Year: 2016 - 2017

On Sunday, our Year 6 Basketball team took part in a tournament before the Cheshire Phoenix match against Sheffield Sharks.

Our first game was against St Barnabas. It was a tight match but Tom managed to score to give us a 2- 0 win. Next up, was St Lukes. We dominated the match and Tom and Juliette scored, helping us to a 4 - 0 victory. Our third match was against The Oaks; we stormed to victory with Toby, Lois and Todd scoring in a 6 - 0 win.

One more match to go for qualification and it was against Little Bollington who had already won one and drawn one. Tom and Todd were rested and the team dug in to grind out a famous 2 - 0 win; Isaac scored a memorable basket in the dying seconds.

And so we qualified for the final, winning all our games and without conceding. We met St Barnabas who had been our toughest opponents. It was a fast and frantic game and both teams showed no nerves of playing in front of a large crowd. Farndon dominated possession but both teams had good chances.

With the game in the last minute, Farndon stormed forward. The ball was passed out to Juliette who made no mistake to put us 2 - 0 in front. The clock was ticking down with just 20 seconds left. St Barnabas made one last desperate attack. With the clock nearlyon zero, they scored a last gap basket to draw level.

A draw! It went to a penalty shoot out. St Barnabas stepped up first and scored. The pressure was immense and Todd bravely stepped up. He shot, it hit the rim and sadly bounced out.

It was a brave effort. Undefeated and they gave their all but just missed out on the trophy this time. Juliette was player of the tournament with 2 baskets and terrific performances. Well done to all our players and a big thank you to all the parents for their support. Also, a huge thank you to Mr McKie who has given the school so much support over these last four years in basketball, winning several trophies and making several finals.
