Hockey Champions

As part of our sports programme, our Year 3 and 4 children took part in a hockey tournament against schools in and around Cheshire and hoped to go one better than last year where we cam runner up. There were 2 groups and the winners of each group would compete in the semi finals.

We took two teams as we feel it is important for as many children as possible to have the opportunity to represent the school and enjoy playing sport. Both of our teams played so well and were a real credit to the school.

  • Farndon's first game was againt a large school - Overleigh - and although we had most of the play, we drew 0 - 0.
  • Tarporley  v Farndon A; Cameron scored twice in a 2 - 0 win.
  • We went into the last match needing to win (+ exceed Overleigh A on goal difference to win the group & progress to the semi). It was a tense game, after Todd's goal was disallowed, but Cameron stepped up again to score in a 1 - 0 win. It was enough to make the semi-finals.

The Farndon B team also played so well and with a little more luck might have also made the semi-finals. They won one game and lost two which left them 3rd in their group. The children can certainly be proud of their performance and they enjoyed their win.

The four table winners, going forward to the semis were Delamere A, Waverton A, Tarporley A and Farndon A.

Semi-Final

Farndon A faced Waverton A in the semi. A very tense game, finishing 0-0 after full time. We went to two minutes extra time. With no goals during extra time we moved to sudden death penalties (hoping that we wouldn’t get the same outcome as last year in the final!). Having decided on our penalty takers Cameron confidently converted our first penalty. Waverton missed their penalty which sent us through to the final for the second year running.

Final

An early goal by Todd gave us the lead, but Delamere A soon came back, to make it 1-1 and that i how it finished. This led to a tense but exciting two minutes of extra time. Todd scored from way inside our half and Cameron scored inside the box in the final minute - a 3 - 1 victory!

The trophy was presented by Chris Todd, an ex-Olympic umpire, apparently v well known in the hockey world.

The children all played brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed playing this sport and I can't wait to display the trophy in our glass cabinet. Well done to Mr Bond for preparing them so well and all the parents for their valuable support pitch side.
