Headteacher Weekly blog week beginning 6th June

Date: 12th Jun 2016 @ 10:46am

Well we have been enjoying the good weather and summer has certainly arrived.

The summer sports have started in earnest with Premier Sports doing Rounders and Tennis after school. Let's hope we find the next Andy Murray. The clubs are very well attended and the children were having great time. I met with Sam from Premier Sports this week in readiness for next year. As the clubs have been so successful, we are looking to keep these going and supplement them with other sports such as the street dance, fencing and judo. Another feature we are looking to bring in is lunchtime clubs with Premier Sports which will be focused training sessions for certain sports before certain competitions. Autumn will be rugby, followed by football.

I spent some time with the Year 6 pupils this week helping with the science revision programme that Mrs Higley has put into place. We have randomly been selected for the science sampling tests this year. It takes place on Monday so fingers crossed they will do well.

You may well have seen on Twitter that we were so pleased in the last week of term to achieve the Gold Mark in Religious Education. Mrs McCarthy has worked incredibly hard and during the inspection the groups of children were fantastic; they had so much knowledge and spoke with interest and passion about the subject. In he last few years, we have worked hard on our SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) curiculum and we are pleased this is reflected in the accreditaitions we have achieved such as this gold mark and Global Lead School status.

I spent the end of the week with groups of children at Abbey Gate College. Our talented pupils in maths, science, art and technology were invited to attend to workshops. They sessions were led by the College teachers and the children got the chance to work with a range of resources and techniques. In science, they made exothermic reactions using chemicals and crystals. The maths was tricky algebra, cracking codes to solve a mystery. The technology so much fun - the children would have been happy staying in the tech lab all day! They designed and built their own city, used a 3D printer to make a robot and a lazer printer to make a name badge in plastic. In art, they created various patterns using a range of media like clay and collage. In 2 hours, they made three pieces of art work! It was a really enjoyable couple of days and a great experience for some of our pupils.
