Year 5 and 6 Broxton Tournament

Well it was the end of an era. The Broxton tournament was the last football action for our Year 6 children. They have enjoyed so much success over the years. A win in the Year 4 league and then they went on to win the Champions trophy. Then, last year many of them played in the successful league winning side and went to Liverpool in the Super 8s finals - a memorable day! Then last year, they won their own Broxton cup.

This season they have tasted highs and lows. A third place finish in the league was a hard pill to swallow; we deserved much more. In the Chester tournament, they performed well, only losing the semi-final in extra time. It ensured qualification to the Cheshire finals. In the group phase they were awesome but the dream ended in the Quarter finals agaisnt Weston from Crewe.

So today was the last chance for some final silverware. We started slowly - a 0 - 0 draw with Tushingham. But then we found our form against Bickerton. Dan and Oliver both scored a brace in a convincing 4 - 0 win. We followed this up with a 2- 0 win against Tilston. Alex took his goal well and Oliver pounced on a defensive mistake.

Then it was Shocklach - a must win game. We had our chances but didn't take them. Cameron had a chance from a few yards out, but their keeper made a great save. Time was nearly up and heads began to drop. Shocklach broke and managed to squeeze their shot into the far corner. The dream was over. Our final game was tough to get motivated for. Alex put us ahead, but then we allowed Clutton through far too easily and then we conceded a sloppy goal on our part. We finished with 2 wins, 2 draws and a defeat.

Player of the tournament was Alex Whitby. Took his goals well and all round solid display.

A runners up place on goal difference. On another day, things may well have gone our way. It has been a real privilege coaching these boys for the last 3 years and it was sad to say a final goodbye. There have been so many wonderful memories and 4 glittering trophies in the cabinet. I will of course also miss the parents who have given such fantastic support over these last few years.
