A festival of football

Both our Year 5 / 6 and 3 /4 football teams went to Blacon High School to play three of their league matches in one night. The were both playing the same teams: Highfields, Dee Point and Acresfield.

The Year 5 / 6 team had one of those days! Luck was not on our side. Against Highfield, they struck first with an early goal. But then we peppered their goal with wave after wave of attacks. It just wouldn't go in. A tactical change with Oliver CB up front and Alex higher up the pitch seemed to work. After hitting the post twice, Jonnie pounced on a rebound off the keeper and we got a deserved equaliser. However, then the sucker punch! With just seconds left, with us pressing for the winner, Highfields broke and with only their second shot of the game they scored on the final whistle - robbed!

Unfortunately, we couldn't shake that game out of our heads and we found ourselves 3 - 0 down to Dee Point after just 5 minutes! But the boys dug in and gave a much better performance in the second half. We had two great chances and then finally Oliver crossed for Jonnie to smash it home. It finished 3 - 1.

Finally, it was Acresfield who had won their 2 matches. But the team gave their best performance in the first half and were camped in the oppositions half. Acresfield came out fighting in the second half and had a few chances and it was fairly equal. Then yet another sucker punch! With the last kick of the game they had a long range shot which Jachym saved only for their striker to pounce onto the rebound. 3 defeats, but the performances were good. Next game we need to find our shooting boots and be a little more direct.

Year 3 and 4

Their first match was against Dee Point. It was a tense first half with the scores level at 1 -1, with Harry scoring the opening goal . Harry  then scored with a stunning strike from the halfway line and Josh scored twice to make it a 4 - 1 win.

Next up was Highfields who had a good side. They went up 1 - 0 but the Farndon team didn't lose their heads. Josh equalised and then Thomas hit a sweet shot from just beyond the halfway line to score to make it 2 -1. There was time for Josh to score again and the game ended with another win - 3 -2.

The final game was against Acresfield and now the confidence was high! Ben smashed in a penalty and Thomas scored his second with a neat finish at the near post. A 2 - 0 win and with 3 victories, we have won our mini league which means we qualify for the later stages of the tournament.

Well done to both teams who gave it their all.
