Headteacher Weekly blog week beginning 9th May

Date: 14th May 2016 @ 3:23pm

I think it is fair to say that this week was dominated by the SATs tests. We opened early and held a breakfast club for the Year 6 pupils with juice and toast. During breakfast, there was time for some last minute revision!!

The reading paper was a real challenge it has to be said, but the pupils did a great job. On Tuesday, it was the grammar. As a school, we have worked really hard on this area of the curriculum with a focus on spelling, grammar and punctuation each and every morning. The children appeared to do really well so fingers crossed. On Wednesday and Thursday it was the maths. The expectation and level of challenge has risen sharply this last year. I was so impressed with the pupils knowledge and each and every pupil gave it their all. Mrs Higley and I were very proud of our Year 6 throughout this week; they had a terrific attitude and worked so hard. A big well done to everyone involved.

The Year 1 and 2 pupils went to a football tournament at the Heber. We sent two teams, both with a chance to do well and go a long way in the competition. Both teams did well, with one of them making the semi-finals. Every time we attend a tournament, we endeavour to take 2 teams. Although this adds to the administration, staffing and time, we feel that it is important as it gives more pupils the opportunity to play competitive sport and represent the school. We pride ourselves on trying to ensure that as many pupils as possible each year get the chance to play for their school. All the details of the sporting events we take part in, and analysis of those pupils taking part in sport clubs or competitions can be found on the website under curriculum.

The Year 2 pupils also started their SATs this week and will continue with these next week. It was the reading on Friday and there is a clear shift to inference in the comprehension rather than retrieval of facts. Like Year 6, our pupils were not phased by it all and tried so hard and smiled throughout.

Next week, let's hope for nice weather as it is time for Sports Day. It would be good for once not to have to postpone and have an enjoyable day.
