Headteacher Weekly blog week beginning 29th February

Date: 6th Mar 2016 @ 11:22am

What a week! There was so much going on that I have to double check that I give everything a mention in my blog.

Early in the week, I spent some time in Year 1 whilst they were guided reading. We have invested heavily into new quality texts and also tweaked the timetable for Year 1 so that they guided read each week and take part in a circus of reading and phonics activities. I had a great morning and was so pleased to see how engaged the Year 1 pupils were with each task and how much they were enjoying their reading.

To promote reading across the school we celebrated the 19th World Book Day. A big thank you to all the parents who took the trouble to make a book character from a humble potato. I was so impressed with the creativity and the wonderful ideas from many of the entries. There were so many fantastic models that made judging so so difficult. Throughout the day, the children also got to engage with texts from around the world and studied the cultures in the different continents. I think it is fair to say that the children had a great day and let's hope that it had the desired effect of promoting a joy of reading.

It was another busy sporting week. The Year 3 and 4 pupils took part in the handball tournament and played against Tilston, Clutton, Malpas and Shocklach in a small league format. Mr Bond told me they played so well and gave it their all. It was a bit of a slow start, meaning we could only draw 2 -2 with Malpas. Then, 2 victories followed over Shocklach and Tilston. It all came down to the final game and a win would secure the trophy. We drew 1 -1 and finished runners up, which was a terific effort all round. Next up, the Year 3 and 4s have a tricky football match against Saughall. The Year 2 football team enjoyed a trip to the Liverpool Academy training ground. Not only did they get to meet the mascot and see the European Cup, but they also had a training session with Liverpool coaches. They gave it their all in the matches and had a really enjoyable day.

Throughout the week, teachers have been planning religious education activities and spiritual experiences for Mrs McCarthy's Faith Focus. Years 3 and 4 had the trip to the Mosque last week and then Reverend Scurr came into school to share religious artefacts with them. Other Year groups on Wednesday enjoyed a multi-cultural dnce workshop with the Bollywood Belles. The whole school enjoyed each year group performance of their dance to different Indian music. The 2 weeks culminated in some of the work being shared with parents and it was nice to see so many taking the time to share in their child's work. mrs McCarthy continues to work hard in helping the school to achieve Silver status for the RE quality mark.

The week ended with another workshop for the Year 5 and 6 pupils. The NSPCC came into school to discuss their work with the chilldren and how to keep safe online. These workshops form part of our Health and Safety Curriculum for all of our pupils. It was certainly a very useful and informative session.

Weeks such as these make me very thankful for the hard working staff that we have in our school and grateful for all the wonderful activites that they plan for our pupils. Across the school, they offer such a breadth to the curriculum as well as making it fun, enjoyable and interesting.

Let's hope next week isn't quite so busy.
