Headteacher blog Week Beginning 9th March

Date: 15th Mar 2015 @ 2:11pm

It has certainly been an eventful few weeks in school, with the children participating in lots of interesting and exciting activities.

As a school, we recognised World Book Day and the children certainly enjoyed coming into school dressed in their dressing gowns and onesies. The children got to share in assembly their favourite bedtime stories. As a child, my favourite book was anything by Roald Dahl, but my particularl favourite was George's Marvellous Medicine. We hope that  taking part in such events like World Book Day instills into our children a love of reading for pleasure and to read as often as they can wherever they may be.

Some of our Year 5 and 6 children were particularly excited this week. I was called to their classroom as there had been a "special delivery." As aprt of their topic - Endangered - the children have taken an interest into rainforest conservation and wrote to Prince Charles who is the patron of a charity trying to protect the world's rainforests. The future King of England was clearly impressed with their writing as he wrote a letter back to Mrs Wakefield and also wrote to each individual child. He also included packs of information and a photograph! I never thought I would say that our writing would receive the royal seal of approval!!

I spent some time this week in maths lessons in the Juniors and was really impressed with the children's attitude to their learning. All the children were clearly motivated and engaged in their learning. It was also really good to see the children being asked to apply their mathematical skills through problem solving. The children clearly enjoyed the level of challenge.

Friday was Comic Relief Day. I am yet to have a final total of money raised, but the children enjoyed doing something "funny for money". There were definitely some interesting outfits and wigs. Our school council back in the Autumn asked if they could host a school Talent Show during Comic Relief and for the last few weeks they worked hard to put on an exciting show. In the afternoon, we were treated to singing, dancing and the playing of different instruments. I was amazed how much talent we had at Farndon and there was certainly no need for a red buzzer!
