Head's blog Week Beginning 6th October

Date: 5th Oct 2014 @ 11:38am

As one parent commented this week, there seems to be something on every week since we have been back in September. School certainly has seen a lot of exciting activities. For our new curriculum, when we plan topics we try to plan for exciting curriculum enhancements, guest speakers and workshops and trips out.

This week it was the turn of the Year 5 and 6 pupils and their Victorian Day. In their topic, "Child of Our Time" the pupils are following a new aspect of the History Curiculum, which enables teachers to look at an aspect of history afer 1066. In this topic, the pupils will learn about what life was like for children, particualrly in the Victorian period and throughout World War II.

Tuesday was Victorian Day. Teachers and Pupils were all appropriately dressed and they came into school with "favours" for the teachers and a penny for their education. The teachers were incredibly strict with some pupils forced to wear a dunce hat or even sent to Office for the cane for simply breaking some chalk!! After a day of drill, maths lessons on shillings and pence and writing with chalk, the children certainly got a flavour of what life was like in the early 1900s. We feel children learn best through practical experience and I'm sure in response to the day the childrn will write some interesting historical reports.

On Monday was our Harvest Festival at the church and the theme this year was Water Aid. As always it was incredibly well supported by Parents and the chilldren performed their songs so well in the church. A big thank you to all the parents as I know a significant amount of money was raised for both the church and Water Aid.

I always like to acknowledge the achievements of our pupils outside of school and I was amazed to hear that at the weekend some of our children have become Record Breakers!!! As part of the Brownies Birthday, children took part in a record breaking sleep over with hundreds of children across the area at Chester Zoo. Well done to Amy M, Daisy C, Katie C and Alanah G in Year 5.

The website has seen some new additions with a curriculum tab. Parents can now access the 2 yearly topics in the curriculum policy, resources for phonics and also the year group expectations for the new Maths Curriculum.

Next week Parents beware as I hear there will be some animals on the loose in Key Stage 1.
